Eco Friendly Shopping Bags

Friday, January 27, 2012 5:55:19 PM America/Denver

The town of Aspen, Colorado has voted to ban plastic bags in grocery stores, and several other Colorado communities are considering the same. Basalt has approved a 20 cent fee on plastic and paper bags, and Carbondale is moving toward the ban as well. Some folks are upset over the ban, saying a government mandate is not the way to do it, and that people should have the choice. With the amount of plastic garbage in our oceans and landfills, it does seem that there should be some incentive not to use plastic bags. We've all got a zillion canvas bags that we've received from the health fair, a conference we attended, a great store we went to and wanted to support, and it's just a matter of remembering to bring them. When we have traveled out of the country, it is not uncommon to go to the grocery store and be charged for a grocery bag. If you want to use it, they add it to your bill, and that's just the way it is. I understand that even our little town of Steamboat Springs is considering something similar. Maybe rather than an all-out ban, if a fee was charged per bag that went to local environmental causes, it would not seem like a mandate but instead a choice. Either you choose to use and pay for a plastic bag, and the money goes to a worthy cause, or you bring your bag from home and save a plastic tree. Wink I almost always bring my own bags, but on the days I forget, I honestly feel guilty. I would probably feel better paying for it if the money was going to support something I believe in, rather than counting toward the bottom line of the grocery store. Just some Monday morning thoughts from EcoSak... Read More

Organic Cotton Shortage

Friday, January 27, 2012 5:42:19 PM America/Denver

We're in the midst of a global cotton shortage right now, which makes things tough for both manufacturers and consumers of cotton goods. This is particularly pronounced in the organic cotton industry, as prices are already higher than conventionally grown cotton. We're doing our best to keep our prices as low as possible during this unfortunate economic situation, and we appreciate your business very much! Read More

Steamboat Springs, Colorado (PR Buzz) October 11, 2010 – “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” recently rebuilt the Lighthouse Preschool in Nashville, Tennessee, which was completely destroyed by historic floods in May of this year.

The Sweatt family has been running the school since 2003, and despite their own tragic losses of eight of its 18 school buildings, they still managed to help more than 200 other families in need during the flood. Their generous efforts touched the lives of many, and at a time when they were at risk of losing the school due to lack of finances, “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” identified the school to makeover.

Several companies, including LP Building Products and HARDAWAY Construction Corp., teamed up with hundreds of volunteers to complete the project. All materials, labor, and products for the build are donated by local and national companies. One such company is EcoSak Eco Friendly Furniture based out of Steamboat Springs, Colorado. EcoSak donated 15 organic cotton bean bags for kids to the project, and these EcoSaks will be used in four of the classrooms and one play room in the Lighthouse Preschool.
